Hey everybody! Just wanted to give you guys an update. I had my first surgery on the 30th of December. The surgery went well but could have gone better is what my surgeon told me. They were able to successfully remove the Cholesteatoma growth in my left ear, but were unable to save my original ear drum. But they were able to create me a new ear drum out of the bit of cartilage that sits in front of your ear. Due to the damage done by the Cholesteatoma the new ear drum is sitting on a kick stand type setup due to me missing an entire bone in my ear. During the surgery my surgeon also had to cut a nerve that controls taste to the left side of the tongue. He told me that I will notice a metallic taste to things I eat from now on and that it may go away with time or it could stay forever. I currently do not notice it and it is not bothering me.
Since the surgery I have had constant pain in my ear. Feeling like a mosquito bite and sometimes a bee sting. The doctor gave me a prescription for Vicodin which has been very helpful. I am slowly weening off of it and switching over to Ibuprofen to manage the pain. I have also been experiencing extreme dizziness and loss of balance anytime I get up from laying down for any period of time. If I stand too long or walk around too much I also get disoriented. I was told this should go away within a week or two.
Overall the surgery went well and I am very glad I had it done. I am also very grateful that I had so many people there to support me. A special thank you to my mother, father, brother, and sister for housing and taking care of me for the first four days after my surgery.
My medical diagnosis. Frustrating pain. Unstoppable nausea. Finally having a name for this creature.
